IMHO auto companies will continue to "push" autonomous cars until there is an accident where several people are severely injured and survive then sue the auto manufacturer of the autonomous operated car, prevail at trial and obtain a very large injury award, ala the Ford Pinto fire case in LA.

Then, to "protect" the industry for the future, that manufacturer and others will alter, or disband the research and sale of autonomous cars. I question any governmental regulation or oversight will be successful.
