Perhaps the questions should start with how much real estate should be wasted on either designated or de facto (gridlock) parking for SOV drivers. Surely many have seen the triptych of how much street space 60 people take up in cars, on bikes, or in a single bus. After computing how much either potential green space or housing space is lost to automobile usage, then maybe one should think of the $$ wasted on post "accident" auto repair/replacement, the cost both personal and societal of either wounded or killed humans, the health costs from highway adjacent pollution, the general CO2, NOX etc. from all internal combustion vehicles,, the ground contamination from fuel tanks, pipelines etc.
Remember, the most important work econmists do is figure out how to shift the costs of damage to the general public away from the enterprise employing them. Envision the pools ofuntaxed pig manure slowly oozing into rivers and bays...

After all of that, then explain why promoting more individual commuting in cars whether cheapie smokers or electrics is of benefit to the population.
Unlike street crime, which some can escape by living in gated (armed) communities, until the overly rich can afford the domes we have all read about in sci-fi stories, they still have to breath.
So, long rant, but frankly all of us benefit by "bribing" as many as possible into using electric or electric hybrid transit be it bus ETB, "light rail" or full on subway/commuter rail.

The 1950s generated suburban SFD w/o any transit was fine for young families; I have a friend who post heart attack and stroke, is essentially incarcerated in a nice house in a transit desert on the edge of Santa Rosa because he can no longer drive. A non driver myself, I have always chosen to live near transit be it rubber or steel wheel.

As to the exorbitant costs of building railtransit (or even medium grade BRT) the contractors and consultants studied how the Defense Dept vendors operate...
