hepkema reports that "they had to drive pilings three times as deep as originally planned to reach bedrock." i have heard reports from many of the old milwaukee road guys up there that when they originally drove the pilings for the benewah trestle there were places that they never did hit bedrock. just one wooden piling on top of the next. seems i recall someone saying that after they banged three pilings down, one on top of the other, they called it good and let the lake bed sort of seal it together! i know it sounds like a loch ness story, but i have heard this from several of the old timers. (which also does not necessarily make it true)
