Welcome back! FWIW, Trainnews has been MIA recently, too.

As for the RENO BRANCH, yes, it's has a steep grade coming out of downtown Reno. Elevation is about 4600' at the junction in Reno, and about 5200' in Stead. That's not a long distance, and your car will probably shift down a couple of gears, at least, climbing the hill on 395. From Stead to the junction with the old WP main line is only another 100-150' climb, though.
