Speaking of the SD&AE, here's some photos I posted earlier.
I think maybe one of the biggest obstacles in re-opening the line is that it doesn't take all that much time and effort to offload a container in El Centro and just truck it to San Diego on Interstate 8. Anything that absolutely MUST move by rail can come down the ex-ATSF line from Orange County.
It's not by any means a heavy-haul, heavy-duty railroad. Never has been and it would cost BILLIONS to make it so. In this really good photo by Mel Patrick, I'm kind of amazed that they were even able to run 89 foot TOFC cars over the line. Locos and cars with six-wheel trucks were rare. I heard in 1976 Ben Biaginni did an inspection trip over the line in his six-wheel-trucked business car
