I remember the bridge units, but never rode one because the family had an SP pass and used the ferries.

But to your question: The Sacramento Northern interurbans used overhead wire on the bridge. This was not the same voltage as used by the Key System. So the bridge units used overhead wire elsewhere but third rail on the bridge. The change was made automatically.
