Appalachia ran out of coal for steel production

The North Coast at one time had three parts to its economy: timber, fishing and the summer tourists.

The last pulp mill closed earlier this year, there are still a few small mills, but none export like the former large mills.

Fishing regulations have limited the crab and salmon seasons.

The Summer tourists now are on cruise ships.

There are still chip barges and fuel oil barges that call, but they do not require pilots.

With or without a railroad, there is not much going on over on the other side of the "Redwood Curtain."

Pity
