The May 1-2 outing is going to be quite the chase. Best bet is the 4% grade. Lots of access points along the route, but the railroad cuts amongst many roads diagonally, so being lineside for the event will only get a few shots at one location. My suggestion, scope out the best place for yourself the day before, and get there early!

Another thing. A friend suggested that next time he would partake in a steam event, he would get a ladder to avoid the "late to arrive foamer" that always gets in the way about 10 seconds before the perfect shot needs to be taken. Anyone seen this before, and does it help in keeping others out of your photos?
