The Dash 9 uses DC traction motors and a diode network to turn the AC generated by the main
alternator to DC. The AC4400 uses AC traction motors yet still turns the AC to DC like the Dash
9 for the purpose of controlling the amperage. Added then is an invertor network to take the
DC one step further and turn it back into AC to drive the AC traction motors. DC motors at lower
speeds tend to become heaters while AC motors can stand low speeds as the drive power essentially
cycles on and off (aka AC) which reduces heating. An AC unit is capable of dragging along for
extended periods at very low speeds whereas the DC unit is limited to nine or so miles per hour
and then for a maximum of one hour though this varies by manufacturer. If you don't need to run
your choo-choo at damned near stop for hours on end the DC version is much simpler.
