I worked as engineer on the K&HV in 1972 and went up again a couple of times in 1973. In
all probability, the locomotive that you rode behind was 3 truck Heisler 10, built in 1912
for Blue Jay Lbr. in West Virginia. She spent most of her working life here in California
hauling logs for Pickering Lbr. Corp. @ Standard, CA. She is considered to be the first
3 truck Heisler built and now sits on display in the town of Elbe, WA near the depot of
the Mount Rainier Scenic Ry.
There was a second steam locomotive at Klamath and it had worked nearby for Hammond. It
is an Alco built 2-8-2T. We didn't use her nearly as much as all her drivers were flanged
and wore excessively on the sharp curves. She too, is at Mount Rainier Scenic in WA and
runs frequently.
Not much left of Gus Petersons railroad left today. The redwood growth is rapid up there
and few traces are left. Too bad, it was one of the neater operations around.
Oh, lest I forget...there is a flatcar that got away and went off the end of the track at
the top switchback and slid down the hill. It should still be there.
