Customs is pretty smooth right now. Stops at the border for re-entry to US, Border Patrol walks the train, you don't even need to get out of your seat. Haven't done any crime or immigration on the train, so can't speak to that. Seeing the cars stacked up at the Blaine crossing point reinforces how nice it is to take the train.
