Rich: If you're referring to the big mill south of I-90 just west of CdA, that was the Atlas mill, which has recently been torn out and the land is now being prepped for development. A new mill is being built at Hauser Junction, directly across the west leg of the wye from another mill site that's been used mostly for reload lately. The only mill left in CdA is Stimson's DeArmond mill, southeast of the U.S. 95 bridge along the Spokane River. It's supposed to be closed within the next year or two. Two mills will be left, Potlatch particleboard plant on the east side of Post Falls, and Idaho Veneer in Post Falls proper. Allblack: those UP meets and/or tie-downs on the branch are an almost daily occurance. Really crazy when it's a big grain or potash train and they have to cut the X-ing at Hwy 41. That heavy rail up to the Feeley Spur was put in a few years back. Don't know if it was for the safer transport of propane tankers or to keep big trains from going on the ground, or both. Yes, that tiny park in the wye at Winona is a hoot. Kept the wife and kids somewhat occupied last spring while I was shooting the loaded grain shuttle there. Abm: Sure am glad to hear that anybody remembers that December '87 winter piece. That's been the subject of several recent letters to the current staff at that magazine, reason being that it was the last time Idaho was given any real feature coverage in said magazine. The Gem State was recently slammed badly by a thousand mostly-Midwest readers, who probably don't know Idaho from Iowa. (Funny story: one of their staffers even said "Iowa" by mistake while we were discussing that Idaho piece over the phone.) Anyway, they now have something in their hands that should, hopefully, put Idaho back in feature form, in another season, later this year. Twenty years overdue. That B&W shot of the BN local pulling past the CdA station sign is not nearly as interesting as some other stuff I bagged back in those days. Like the softball game going on at that classic municipal field with its wooden stands while the BN local is parked in the background, its crew leaning on the railings taking in the game. Thanks, guys, for the much-needed encouragement.
