Take a look at KTVU.Com.

They have a slide show and a several minute video of the burning trestle. In some sections, the rails are just hanging there, nothing left under them!

I can't think of an efective detour from Donner - maybe roseville Wye to Marysville, back around the wye, then down the WP to the wye at Hagen, back to Elvas. I believe the West Valley Line already has been cut by an out of service bridge.

I wonder why such an strategic trestle was still wooden. If the fire was set, they couldn't have picked a more strategic spot in Northern California.

I too believe that UP is already assembling their B&B gangs to get at least a temporary shoefly structure in place.
