In Australia, several railroads operate 40+ year old diesels, including EMD cab units. While in Darwin on May 13, 2009, before we boarded The Ghan to head to Adelaide, we spotted an EMD cab unit on the lead of an empty Genesee & Wyoming iron ore train at the terminal which was preparing to head south. This diesel is known as a "GM Class", and it closely resembles an EMD E9, complete with four portholes. It has one 16 cylinder 567C prime mover, which produces 1,750 HP. It was built by Clyde Engineering under EMD license in Australia in 1967, and was delivered to the South Australian Railways. This diesel, designed as number GM45, is one of 12 such diesels on the roster of Genesee & Wyoming's Australian division. The Genesee & Wyoming operates several lines in Australia, including the 1,851 mile line between Darwin and Adelaide. The G&W began operations in Australia in 2006 when it purchased the assets of the Australian Rail Group.
