OK. And where was this? Hayward, or up near the Oakland Coliseum?
The "Long Street Job" out of West Oakland workes the northern portion of the line (between High Street and 92nd Avenue in far East Oakland) Sundays through Thursday evenings. The "54 Local" that works the south end is a daytime job. As previously mentioned, there are no customers along the out-of-service portion, no through trains, and it's occasionally used for car storage. For example, just yesterday the Fremont siding was filled up with empty multi-levels (auto carriers) for storage.
From what you've describe, it sounds to me that you saw the "Long Steet." It handles box cars and coil-steel cars (covered gondolas and flats).
