There are separate rail and roadway bridges. The roadway bridge connects Fruitvale Avenue in Oakland with Tilden Way in Alameda and is called the Miller-Sweeny Bridge. The rail bridge is still maintained in operating condition by Alameda County (which operates the bridges over the Oakland Estuary) and Union Pacific, although as mentioned in another post, some (but not all) sections of rail on both sides of the bridge have been removed by UP.

Some of the (many) proposals for the redevelopment of Alameda Point (the former Naval Air Station property) is to use the rail bridge for some sort of rapid transit or light rail line that would connect with the Fruitvale BART station. One proposal called for a type of monorail. I'll believe it when I see it.
