The Fruitvale railroad bridge is kept in a half-raised position, adequate for most vessel traffic. Boats with tall masts get a higher lift to pass. It's controlled by the Miller Sweeney bridge operator.
The Park St., Miller Sweeney and High St. bascule bridges are low clearance structures; approx. 15 feet. For that reason those spans make a good number of openings. Many boats are docked east of Park St. along with a major boat yard and a dredger.
The other Alameda draw spans, a bicycle bridge and the Bay Farm Island bridge, have less openings due to the shallow channel between San Leandro Bay and San Francisco Bay. However, an operator is on duty 7 days a week.
