With either operator your pretty safe, and with improved on-site supervision you are already safer today. If you did drive to the train station, you have to remember your risk was an order of magnitude greater in the liklihood of death or injury. If you are driving to work today, that is also the case.
As one commentor noted on the Connex-Veolia issues that have come out-"there are bus people and there are railroaders".... maybe, it seemed cheaper at the time to go with "bus" people? In-house or "out-house", the need for proper instruction, testing, supervision, and oversight is paramount, and it was one factor lacking in the case of the Chatsworth incident that has to be addressed.
