Boxcar Antennas?

Yesterday I drove highway 99 south from Fresno to Bakersfield, in California. About 20 miles north of Bakersfield, on the UP main, at mile post 296, I saw two unusual box cars on a siding on the west side of the main. On each corner of the roof there was a vertical "strut", about 2-3 feet high, and the four corner struts were connected by a wire. This was too flimsy to be a support railing of any sort. The only thing I can think of is some sort of antenna. I did not see a wire leading below, or from the antenna on one car to the other, but I did not stop to look, so I may have missed that or other revealing clues.

Any idea what I saw?
