There are nine surviving sheds on Marias. After the concrete retaining wall where shed 4C once stood, the sheds are counted westward as 4D, 5 & 6 (formerly two sheds, joined together as a single shed prior to 1955), 7, 8, 9, 10, 10.7, 11, and finally 12 just east of Essex. Shed 10.7 has apparently confused some workers because at its east end there's a small marker on the center post reading "10" with a ".7" added later by hand, and a small marker on the south side post reading "10.5". The large ID placard on the shed's south side and all other forms of railroad and government documentation refer to it as 10.7.

There used to be some large sheds on the east slope, captured in steam era photos by Phil Hastings and others. At least three of these sheds are still shown on certain topo maps today, decades after they vanished. Shed 1 was west of Browning, on the curve where U.S. 2 now crosses over the track. Shed 2 was on the east side of the crest between Spotted Robe and Grizzley. The last major shed to survive between there and the summit was 4A, located on the old alignment through Rising Wolf (north of the west end of present day Bison).

Despite abundant documentation of the shed numbers and locations, and the simple fact that so many fans have photographed them over the years, they have often been misrepresented in books and magazines. Short of an actual visit to Marias, a visit to Googlemaps or GoogleEarth will show exactly where the sheds are today.
