Looking northwest from the U.S. 95 overpass in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, on August 19, 2009, empty centerbeams stretch as far as the eye can see on BNSF's Coeur d'Alene Branch. A hotel and condos in the distance are on land once occupied by the Northwest Timber mill, which closed in 1990. About a quarter mile behind the photographer was Stimson Lumber Company's DeArmond Mill in Coeur d'Alene, which closed in May 2008. BNSF's Coeur d'Alene branch uses a mix of ex-NP, GN, and MILW track. The track holding these centerbeams is ex-GN, which MILW also began using in the 1940s after closing a portion of its own branch. UP's former SI branch into Coeur d'Alene, at bottom right, ducked under the GN here through a short tunnel. MILW's original line into CdA ran along Northwest Blvd, just beyond the trees at right, while NP track into CdA ran nearly a mile northeast of this location. The gravel road next to the centerbeams was used by log trucks shuttling between the mills. The paved bike trail is NOT laid on railroad grade here.
