Track maintenance terminology - need help.

Okay, I'm checking out the NWP ROW. There are sections were ballast has been dumped and "groomed"- regulated? Tamped? In some of these areas, the rails are more crooked than a politician's spine. What's that other machine that re-aligns the rails? How does all that work, anyway? It would seem that after you align the rails, you'd have to go back and rework the ballast, no? Inquiring minds want to know.
