Use the acronym "SLD" to do everything to pretty things up. Stands for Surface-Line-Dress. The surfacing and lining are done with one machine and then followed up with a ballast regulator to dress up the ballast section. The cautionary item before making an SLD pass is to make sure that you have enough good ties, otherwise, you'll just pull the rails up and/or squeeze the bad ties into splinters. (An SLD pass will usually help you find your bad ties really fast.)
