Does anyone still use the treated wooden spike hole plugs, to fill and re-spike a loose hole, without taking the entire tie out and turning it over? I must have used about a gazillion of those plugs, for re-lining an out-of-guage curve, or in a bouncing tie under a weak rail joint. I have watched the machines work, with some envy, and it still amazes me what they can do, besides save a lot of back pain. At least, though, for a few years, I had arms like Popeye!
