My father was an SP A&WE mechanic out of W.Oakland in the 70's, and refused to stay in those nasty trailers in Gilroy and instead would wake up 3 hours earlier and commute from Alameda every morning or when needed. He said most employe living quarters furnished by the Company were not in good shape not to mention when your job is on the railroad, when he was off the clock, he didn't wanted to be reminded or bothered by trains 50ft away rattling the trailer!
