On the evening of August 25, 2009, a Union Pacific potash train passes Interstate, Idaho, with two UP SD90/43MACs on the front and a CP AC4400CW and ES44AC as DPUs on the rear. Interchanged from CP to UP at Eastport, Idaho, the train is bound for the Canpotex terminal at Rivergate/Terminal 5 outside Portland, Oregon. Potash exports from Saskatchewan were down to a trickle during the first half of 2009, but are already on the rebound and expected to remain strong into 2010. These potash trains handed off to UP have usually seen DPUs placed at mid-train, but recent ones have seen DPUs on the rear instead. Canadian potash has also been hauled down this UP route (formerly the Spokane International) in shorter unit trains bound for Little Mountain, Utah, and as small blocks in manifests for delivery to fertilizer plants like the one seen here at Interstate.
