Thanks, Jay. You've provided some of the best info I've seen on Lookout Pass operations since the publication of John Wood's "Railroads Through the Coeur d'Alenes" in 1983. I'd love to see someone (who was there at the time) do a proper book dealing specifically with Lookout. The most recent mention I've seen of it in print (which wasn't meant to be a mention of Lookout at all) was in a BNSF book where a picture of the S bridge was erroneously captioned as being "on the Northern Pacific branch to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho." The author or publisher apparently didn't realize that the imprint identifying the scene as being on the Coeur d'Alene Branch was a reference to NP's first CdA Branch, that being the line over Lookout Pass into the CdA mining district. It was later renamed the Wallace Branch around the time that the Fort Sherman branch into Coeur d'Alene was renamed the Coeur d'Alene Branch. About the only way one might consider the NP line over Lookout as being a branch to CdA is if they factor in the former narrow gauge connection it had with boats on the CdA River, which ferried freight and passengers across the lake to CdA, but that's a stretch.
