Overfire jets were nozzles placed in the center of the three holes where you can see the fire in the 765. Steam could be blasted out of these nozzles and into the fire box via a valve in the cab. When turned on, the steam drew additional air into the firebox, which served to provide a little more oxygen to the gasses of combustion, thus cutting down on the smoke. They were also called "smoke consumers."
We took them off a LONG time ago. In today's excursion scenario, they aren't needed and they are just something else to maintain. The type of coal that we typically use can be fired very clean without the use of overfire jets.
