The Rio Grande Scenic Railroad operates daily steam- and diesel-powered excursions over 9,242 foot La Veta Pass between Alamosa and the town of La Veta, Colorado between Memorial Day and October. The rail line was formerly owned by the Denver & Rio Grande Western, which opened for service in 1877. The scenery on both sides of the pass is spectacular, as the line winds through very inaccessible mountainous areas and passes through two tunnels and several rock cuts. The east bound grade to La Veta is 2.5 percent; west bound leaving La Veta the grade is 3 percent. There is a three hour layover in La Veta which provides ample time to have lunch, walk through the interesting shops or tour the museums. The steam engine is turned on a wye at La Veta for the trip back to Alamosa. During 2009 the trips were steam-powered Wednesdays through Sundays, and powered by diesels the other days of the week. Their steam power in 2009 was ex-Lake Superior and Ishpeming 2-8-0 No. 18, which they acquired from the Mount Hood Railroad in 2008. The coach fare for adults is $48.00, and for just ten dollars additional you can upgrade to ride in a full-length dome car. The dome cars were originally built by Budd for the Santa Fe in 1954, then went to Amtrak in 1971, and were later sold to the Holland American Cruise Lines and used on the Alaska Railroad.
