From today's (Oct. 28) Monterey Herald, letter to the editor:
TAMC dreaming with light rail project
Right in the middle of the worse recession in 30 years, the Transportation Agency for Monterey County has made up its mind to construct a Disneyland-style commuter train from Castroville to the Peninsula. Why a train from Castroville to Monterey? Who will be the passengers? According to the census, the population of Castroville is a whopping 6,700 people. How many of them are commuting to Monterey on a daily basis? Where are they going? Does TAMC think commuters from San Jose will "park and ride" in Castroville?
Oh and, who actually thinks the city of Monterey is going to give up the Recreation Trail for a train?
It is time the public put their foot down and "just say no" to the social architects who plan on spending $217 million for this taxpayer rip-off. Let's demand all agencies tighten their belts like the rest of us, instead of spending money the state and county do not have.
