The WURR RDC's only lasted part of one season being self propelled due to continuous mechanical ailments. Since then, they usually run as trailers if at all.
Current status:
#10 - out of service a couple years due to failed APU
#11 - Operable - usually operates as a trailer in the train, but can run by itself. Used last year for some of the fishing trains out of Minam in February and March. All are now single end controls after last BCR rebuild, so single car operation requires a backup move half the time.
#31 - Drives not useable due to intermittent engine control system (obsolete electronics). Usually on train as a trailer due to its kitchen. Engine does not run around the train much any more, so the #31 or #11 is used as a pilot car on the reverse move to provide lights, horn and an emergency valve for the conductor.
WES' DMUs are single end controls - they bought three powered units and one control trailer (cab car). This gives them excatly two sets of equipment, with no spares. They should have originally ordered at least one more control trailer to allow one unit down for repairs, assuming there was a way to turn them at the shop to keep the operable units back to back. The RDCs will not have compatible control systems, so will probably always be the "spare" trainset if one of the CRC DMUs is down.
