Jon,

Guard rails fell out of favor in AREA and now AREMA for about 15 years or so if not longer. It seems that engineers reasoned they could lead to more severe derailments and more extensive damage. It sure seemed to me that they could prevent derailed locomotives/cars from going over the side of a bridge. I was told the exact logic behind it, but can't remember it now.

Now, within the last couple of years, I have seen many bridge projects designed WITH guard rails again, so maybe they are making a comeback.
