Freight railroads all to often get a bad rap. UP hates amtrak I know, BNSF does a good job.
Last three Amtrak trips I rode---------ALL THE DELAYS WERE AMTRAK'S FAULT. In one case the BNSF was holding ten trains (Spokane- 3 UP trains, 7 BNSF road freights including one "Z", there was also a switch engine that was wanting to get on with their day waiting for one of the freights caught up in the mess) while Amtrak attempted to complete the air test on our train. Finally someone bothered to check angle cocks and after 45 minutes we were on our way. (I usually carry my radio when I travel Amtrak--have a hard time keeping my finger off the transmitt button some times.) Freight railroads aren't perfect, but Amtrak shouldn't complain so much until they can quit stubbing their own toes so much. Getting the government involved never speeds things up, just adds paperwork and reports to fill out.
