UP stack trains originating in Portland (Albina Yard) often use the former Graham line to run eastbound from Portland to Troutdale. There is a significant grade up "Sullivan's Gulch", through which the line runs from East Portland all the way to the old Clarnie siding site about six miles out.

What you may have seen is a loaded eastbound that came upgrade on the Graham line to Troutdale, where it joins the Kenton line, the low-grade line that comes in to Albina from the north and is also the route for Seattle-bound trains. The DPU would most likely stay on as far as the yard at Hinkle, west of Pendleton.
