Sam didn't say the line is closing, just that there'll be reduced traffic.
UP notified employees last month of its intentions, which are to reroute all intermodal traffic via Donner, with a gradual phase-in starting on or about November 7th. After that, UP intends to only regularly run westbound manifests (such as the MNPRV/MNPRVB) and bulk commdoities unit trains (coal, grain, etc.) via the Canyon Sub. So, that would be somewhere between 1 and 4 trains. There would be no regular eastbound UP trains. The Canyon would remain available for detour movements.
Portola will be greatly reduced, and possibly eventually eliminated, as a Home Terminal for pool crews. UP held "Town Meetings" about it recently. Crews for the westbound Canyon trains would be called off the board at Sparks.
