Those things might be acceptable now, Carol, but give the enviros time, and they will find something or invent something wrong with those uses, too. No matter what we do to clean up the air, these people will never be happy and will never back off.
A few years ago, CARB banned trucks idling. Usually, the idling was so the driver could have air conditioning or heat in the cab while he's sleeping during his mandated rest periods. CARB didn't care that it can get well over 100 degrees in the cab of a truck. Then they mandated Auxilliary Power Units (APUs), which are small diesels that produce enough power for a/c and heat in the cab. So, the big motor isn't running, a lot less fuel is being used, a lot less emissions. Problem solved, right? Nope. CARB promptly banned the APUs.
The 2010 truck engines will be so clean that the exahust from the stacks is actually cleaner than the intake air going into the engine. The air boards should be ecstatic, right?
Give 'em a while and they'll go after these clean engines, too.
