Without looking @ the photos, I can say the Sounder Lakewood Extension uses 99% existing Right of Way. It's the other 1% that is an issue. Upon leaving Freighthouse Square Station on the ex - Milwaukee Road line, the Extension will bridge over the intersection of Pacific Ave., South Tacoma Way, & 26th St and then connect with the former NP line up the gulch along South Tacoma Way & thru the ' Nalley Valley ' to stations @ South Tacoma & Lakewood. The issue involves what type of structure will be used to gain elevation over the intersection. Everything from a long trestle to a combination fill & bridge has been suggested. Some in the city don't want to " wall off " the mostly dumpy warehouse area South of the R of W with a fill. The other issue I can see happening will involve wear & tear on traction motors from climbing the 3% grade in the gulch.
Considering that no visible work has begun on the fill / bridge @ Pacific Ave., I am surprised at the amount of rehab that is occurring on the rest of the extension. Perhaps Sound Transit is afraid of losing funding if they don't spend it soon.
