Sorry about that. I can't seem to get the insert hyperlink button to work.

When the weather is good, a good number of cyclists and even pedestrians use the current underpass under the rails, slowing down the heavy vehicle traffic whenever they have to share the road.

From an article on Oct 27, 2009
Work on the Mousehole, where Highway 89 south crosses under Union Pacific Railroad, continues as the town and Caltrans plan a second tunnel for pedestrians and cyclists.

“We had our first meeting with the railroad and submitted our information to the Union Pacific headquarters,” Wilkins said.

The town is seeking $4 million in stimulus funding and $900,000 from Highway System Improvement funds, to combine with $500,000 expected to be left from planning and design work, Wilkins said, which should bring the project close to the $5.5 to $6 million estimate.

Design and environmental work should take another nine months, he said.

The Sierra Sun has a good number of articles on this topic.
