These fifty-plus year old log flats from the Milwaukee Road are being
scrapped at the rate of 10-14/day right now.
They are owned by Potlatch Lumber Company and until last August were
operated by the railroad that they own, the St Maries River Railroad
(Idaho). It was decided not to haul logs any more on this, one of the last
true "loggers" in the U.S. They used the original Elk River Branch line of
the Milwaukee Road to haul the logs from Clarkia to the mill in St Maries.
They will continue to haul the finished products of plywood and dimensional
timber from the Potlatch Mill in St Maries to the connection with the Union
Pacific at Plummer, Idaho, on the old Milwaukee Road mainline but the log
hauling portion is at an end, as are the 400+ log flats used by them. I
think all but 25 of the log flats are friction bearing - as demonstrated by
the smoke from the bearings and brakes as the train nears the end of the
downgrade from Clarkia to St Maries.
