Iowa Traction Railroad employees prepare to move a cut of loaded cover hoppers containing soybeans at the Land ‘O Lakes Farmland Feed facility in Mason City, Iowa on June 28, 2004. The cars will be taken to the ICE interchange in Mason City. Electric locomotive No. 54 was built by Baldwin-Westinghouse in 1923, and was originally Southern Iowa Railway’s No. 400 until they dieselized in 1967. The Iowa Traction Railroad Company, which began service in 1897, was one of over a dozen electric terminal railroads in the U.S. in the early 1900's; today it is the last U.S. railroad using electric locomotives to haul freight in regular service.
