To clarify, the Trainmaster faced with some heavy tonnage might check with the roundhouse to see if a Train Master was available for the assignment.

For younger readers, SP frequently assigned the TM's (and later the SDP 45's) to handle freight over the weekend. While assigned to Commute service I've seen photographs of the TM's wantering as far south as San Louis Obisbo and the SDP's as far east as Sparks. It was always an anxious time to be sure these wanderers were back "home" to San Jose in plenty of time before the Monday morning fleet.
