The media accounts of this HSR fare increase are baffling. The $55 fare always sounded suspiciously low. The fare today from Paris to Brussels is $82, and that is half the distance of San Francisco to Los Angeles, and with no mountain ranges in between. But why the increase, why now, and why that amount of money? The new higher fare is probably an attempt to sweeten the project for the private investors who are supposed to put their dough into it.
