Speaking of rail service to Allentown, SEPTA briefly experimented with Allentown service in the late 1970s, before shutting down its non-electrified (RDC) trains in 1981.
The agency extended several of its Philadelphia-Lansdale-Bethlehem RDC runs west along the Conrail, ex-Lehigh Valley main into a temporary platform on the edge of downtown Allentown, near East Penn Junction (where the RDG East Penn Branch intersected the LV before crossing the Lehigh River into Allentown Yard). I forget how long the extension lasted, but it was a good try.
