Toward the mid to late 1950s, this was a lumber yard. This triangle is now occupied by Safeway etc.

The number of tracks on Adeline and their configuration between Alcatraz and Ward St (and on to University and Shattuck) varied over the years. As I understand the situation, the Key's original line to Berkeley (1903), was one track on the east side of the SP's track. The configuration of the streetcar tracks changed several times over the years, until the last configuration was installed in 1941. For details see Vernon Sappers's Key System Streetcars book. I have no information where the transbay line went to one track on Adeline St.

As a result of the 1933 "rationalization" of the Key and SP lines, the Key's Shattuck Ave transbay line was cut back to Alcatraz -- actually to about a block north in order to accommodate trains laying over while connecting with the K streetcar line. After the SP electrics were abandoned in 1941, one track was installed to connect with the Shattuck Ave streetcar line at Ward St, and for a very brief period of time, a few weeks at best, the line returned to its 1903 northern terminus: University and Shattuck, on the streetcars tracks on the East side of Shattuck. After things had been worked out about operating over the former SP tracks and the necessary track connections installed, the Shattuck Ave Streetcar line was shifted over to the center of Shattuck just south of Dwight Way with the streetcar getting a new lay over point on the former SP tracks just south of University Ave (the trains, of course, used the same tracks but continued on to Thousand Oaks) -- there was a sprung crossover in front of the Roos Brothers clothing store for turning the streetcars back.

The SP retained one track on Adeline to serve the industries at Ward St, with a tail track for switching, which is the reason the Key's trains ran on the east side of Shattuck all the way to Dwight Way. I'm not sure when the second SP track was removed from Adeline.

Pieces of the SP's 9th St line survived in use until the mid to late 1990s.
