It would be very interesting to see the proposed route laid out on this map. I still wonder how you get from one side of the canyon to the other without building a bridge.
To the question of why the rush to abandon the old route and build the new tunnel, I've heard it said that the GN was very interested in having the disaster at Wellington fade quickly from the public memory. To the extent that the name was changed to Tye, so perhaps this desire to "move on" was a factor in the re-alignment. No more trains past Wellington, er Tye.
