How about this scenario?
If BNSF was to install doors of the "Second" Cascade tunnel (currently in use) halfway inside the tunnel, and a ventilation pipe with fans installed vertically, essentially you would have a long bore that can act as two. The time to purge the exhaust of EB's would be cut in half, and as long as one door is closed at any given time, the draft could constantly be there to help airflow, and allow closer spacing of EB's, the true bottlneck of the current system.
I think CP's Mt McDonald Tunnel has this kind of function. Any other thoughts?
