The Grand Opening Date for the Trinidad Bypass was August 16, 1991. Trains had been using the new line a few weeks prior to the Grand Opening. Most of the old line has been pulled up, the bridge and track still are in place across the Pugatorie River to allow access to a couple of businesses that sometimes ship by rail. The former depot is still intact, not sure about it's current use.

From the Original Program handed out to last spike participants and train riders.

Trinidad Rail Relocation Project:
Joint Effort Strerches Colorado Transportation Dollars

Today marks the formal opening of the Trinidad Rail Bypass. The project was initiated in 1987 as a result of the new U.S. Highway Bypass construction at Trinidad.
The original Highway Bypass plan called for construction of four grade-separated crossings in addition to total reconstruction of the Goddard Avenue and I 25 Interchange.
Bulrington Northern Railroad, Colorado Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration and Public Utilities Commission, in a jooint effort, agreeded to reroute Burlington Northern's rail line northeast of Trinidad as part fo the U. S. 160 Bypass consruction. The change shortens the rail line by 2.83 miles.
The benfits of the cooperative effort are many:
The Colorado Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration contributed a combine $2.5 million toward the $8 million relocation of the BN mainline, which helped accelerate the Bypass construction and resulted in a net savings of $3 million.
Elimination of the three railroad grade seperations and the Goddard Avenue/I-25 interchange reconstrction means a saving in overall costs as weel as acceleration fo the U.S. Bypass by one year.
Elemination of a 12 degree horseshoe railway curve and numerous at grade rail/highway crossings throughout the town will mean improved safety for pedestrians and motorists, as well as significant reductions in noise levels from train operations; and
Improved traffic flow in downtown Trinidad.
