I was able to get away for a while this afternoon to witness the Union Pacific's last roundtrip on the Santa Cruz Branch. Two rebuilt GP40-2's take three empty centerbeams home to Watsonville Junction as they roll onto the high trestle at La Selva Beach, California this afternoon. Quite a few fans were out to witness the historic event despite the damp weather. The Sierra Railroad supposedly takes over next week, but nobody knows for sure. Undoubtedly there will be one less train UP crew at the old junkyard now.
