Yep, they sure were. I remember back in the mid 60's, I was working a local out of Los Nietos, CA. and every week my braking partner and I would trade off getting to work 45 minutes to an hour early to work so that we could put our grips, water and other supplies on one of the two "Cruds" at LNS. There were 5 engines and 4 crews that went on duty around the same time. So, if we got our stuff on one of the cruds it was pretty well "reserved" as we had already serviced it.
