Re: The Last SP Train # 75, The Lark April 8, 1968 at LA

There are some corrections to be made regarding this previous thread that started on December 30.

Most importanly, Drew Jacksich's photo was taken on April 7, 1968, not April 8. The last runs of the northbound and southbound Larks left their respective terminals on the night of April 7.

The number of the trailing unit was #6450 according to an SP printout of the consist I obtained when I rode the last run of the Lark (still have the printout).

WAF correctly said Sunday, though it was April 7 that was Sunday, not April 8.

George Andrews wrote (toward the bottom of the thread):

>Keep in mind, Sgt. Friday, the conditions Santa Fe faced with their proposed Grapevine route of 1915. Much of their traffic was due to the Kern County Oilfield boom. Once a pipeline was installed this traffic largely went away.

Santa Fe oil traffic over the Tehachapis had already gone away two years prior to 1915 when General Petroleum's Lebec to Mojave pipeline was placed into operation on August 1, 1913 (this was a branch of GP's pipeline from Kern County to San Pedro. There never in this periond was an oil pipeline through the Tehachpis roughly paralleling the rail route as John Signor incorrectly indicated in his Tehachapi book).
